What exactly is OpenID? 
 

On the Internet, you often have to provide a name and password or register certain information in order to be able to log in and access information or to place orders (name, address, email, telephone number, etc.). This is a tiring and repetitive process. How does OpenID work? 

 

OpenID is very simple and easy to use: 

• You decide on a name for your OpenID  for example "johnsmith",

• An address along the lines of "http://www.openiduk.co.uk/johnsmith” will then be assigned to you,

• You log in to your personal OpenID account and provide your details,

• From now on when you enter a web site which requires your details, you just type in your OpenID address to log in (after being automatically redirected to your OpenID page first, where you will need to enter your password).
   

How do I get a OpenID address? 
 

It's simple, you just need to choose a username and password and in a few seconds your OpenID address is created and you can use it immediately. 
 

 

Which sites already offer OpenID? 
 

It's still early days for OpenID, but very soon, as more people get OpenID accounts the more you will find sites where you can use OpenID. By opening an account you will be part of OpenID's development.
 

 

Do I have to subscribe to OpenID and what is my commitment?
 

OpenID is an entirely free and accessible service. It is a non-profit making organisation, created by engineers and those with a keen interest in digital identity technology, to develop the OpenID product. You can decide to stop using OpenID at any time and return to your old way of identifying yourself on-line. 
 

 

Will I receive advertisements from OpenID and will my personal information be protected? 
 

The OpenID site displays no advertising and will never e-mail you*. The OpenID system helps you to protect and monitor your identity information by displaying the list of sites and the information that you allow them to see. Your personal data is never communicated to third parties and is stored on a secure server.
